Government Investments Fuel Growth in Ontario’s Meat Processing Sector
We would like to announce exciting news from the heart of Ontario’s agri-food sector. The Governments of Canada and Ontario are injecting up to $10 million into the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), aimed at boosting the capacity and competitiveness of meat processing plants and abattoirs across the province. As avid supporters of the meat processing industry, we’re thrilled to share this update with you.
The Meat Processors Capacity Improvement Initiative, part of the Sustainable CAP, is set to revolutionize the way Ontario’s meat processing sector operates. With these investments, we can expect to witness a surge in efficiency, productivity, and food safety practices within the industry.
Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, couldn’t have put it better when she said, “Ontario’s meat processing industry meets the highest standards for producing high-quality food and is constantly striving to innovate. This investment will help the industry continue to grow through new productivity-improving technologies.”
Indeed, the commitment to innovation is a hallmark of our industry, and this funding will further catalyze our pursuit of excellence.
So, what can meat processors in Ontario expect from this initiative? Well, eligible meat plants and abattoirs will have the opportunity to make short-term investments in equipment, technologies, and practices that enhance their operations. Funding of up to $150,000 per eligible applicant will be available, opening doors to a world of possibilities for our industry players.
Lisa Thompson, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “Not only will this initiative have a positive impact for Ontario meat processors, but we’re also increasing competitiveness in a global market.” As members of the meat processing community, we understand the importance of staying ahead in the global arena, and this initiative aligns perfectly with that goal.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time such an investment has been made. Previous investments totaling over $14 million have already been injected into the Meat Processors Capacity Improvement Initiative since 2020. This demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the growth and development of our sector.
But that’s not all! The Meat Processors Capacity Improvement Initiative will also cover consulting and engineering costs associated with planning future projects. Applications open on August 31, 2023, and will remain open until January 31, 2024, or until the initiative is fully subscribed, whichever comes first. Eligible projects can start incurring costs as of July 26, 2023, with equipment delivery expected by March 1, 2024. Recipients will have until June 28, 2024, to have their equipment installed.
The Sustainable CAP is a five-year (2023-2028), $3.5-billion investment that spans federal, provincial, and territorial governments. It’s designed to strengthen competitiveness, innovation, and resilience in the agriculture, agri‐food, and agri‐based products sector. With $1 billion in federal programs and activities and $2.5 billion in cost-shared programs, it’s a testament to the government’s commitment to our industry’s growth.
In conclusion, these investments are a boon to the meat processing industry in Ontario. As we embrace new technologies and practices, we’re gearing up for even higher standards of quality and safety in our products. Let’s make the most of this opportunity and continue to drive the success of Ontario’s meat processing sector!
